So the theme song is being worked on right now and I was asked to write the lyrics for it. What can I say? I don't know anything about music and I've never writtin lyrics for a song before so... here it goes.

Getting your character comps into a new pose is relatively easy. I start by dropping my comps onto the stage and size them according to the scenes specs.

I then take a look to see what parts of the characters need to be reposed and break those elements down and roughly position them into the desired pose in the storyboard.

Then I draw the revisions with the comps underneath as a guide. This ensures that the models will stay roughly to scale.

Then I clean up the rough line in Flash, making sure that the new clean line is consistent to the original comps clean line.

And last, I color and make each new element a symbol. Once the symbols are created I go in and add a shadow layer. Now my new poses are ready to be animated in the scene.

So scenes have started to come in. I asked alot of you to do 'custom' posing for your scenes and I hope that isn't causing too many headaches - but I do think it's important to 'draw' the characters, or their parts when need be.

Here's a scene that I made some design notes on. So, no worries if your drawings aren't perfectly on model - I will help get you there.

Later in the series, Crush transforms his beater car into a hotrod to race Chaz. I posted these before but felt it was relevent to post them again.

Here's a simple parking lot BG. I typically color in flash, then take the image into photoshop and adjust the colors till i'm happy. I then bring it back into the vector based flash program and eye dropper the new colors onto the image. I find I can keep the image free from aliasing this way.

This sequence is a bit bigger and will take longer to do, so I'll post it up a little at a time so the old blog doesn't sit idle.

I wanted to give a huge shout out to Lisa Jones, Curtis Lelash and Khaki Jones over at Cartoon Network. These are the 3 amazing exects who were championing our show for the past 6 months.

Mark and I just wanted to make sure you knew how much we appreciated the (very) short time we worked together while developing Monstrocity High. The supportive collaboration we got from the team at Cartoon Network is something we don't experience too often.

It was very refreshing to have discussions with people who "get it", and who choose to encourage and support creators rather than micro-manage them and force ideas of what their show "should be".

Thank you for believing in our show and us as creators with a unique vision.

Back in September Monstrocity High was optioned by Cartoon Network and for the past 6 months we've been developing the project with much anticipation from both sides. Unfortunately, due to the economy, CN had to pass on the series and now we find ourselves with a killer show and no where to show it.

We plan to keep developing and pitching in hopes of finding a NEW home for Monstrocity High.

We had been contacted awhile back by Warner Bros. - they had come across our vinyl toy "Crush" and wanted to use it as set dressing in a new pilot they were doing called "Spaced". turns out the pilot was pitched to Fox and they turned it down, which is too bad, cuz it looked pretty funny.

Shit! I hope they don't blame us.

UPDATE: Despite all the buzz, and exec producer McG, and a "phenomenal cast", Spaced is a no-go, I'm told. FBC just turned thumbs down on the WBTV/Wonderland pilot, which was adapted from the successful British TV series.

We had TONS of problems with the colors on our last vinyl. not only did we have a record breaking number of spraypads but we found out much too late that the figure should've been broken down into 7 seperate sections as opposed to our original 3.

PMS#'s are a tricky thing to calculate when your working on a monitor. the variation from our actual pantone color guide to the monitor to the photoshop eyedropper are staggering to say the least. there is no way that i know how to get the colors perfect and in the end you just have to go with your gut and hope the thing comes back from china looking half decent - and without lead - HA.

SEPARATION ANXIETY...

One thing you should expect when you set out to make your own vinyl toy is that there will, with out question, be set backs.

"Separation" turned out to be one of our biggest set backs. In order to paint the vinyl the "spray pads" (CRUSH has over a hundred) must lay flat. The more bumps, the more chance of overspray. Our original had 3 separations - the head, torso and legs - BIG PROBLEM.

This time around CRUSH will be separated into 7 sections - head, brow, arms, torso, waist and legs. This will help tremendously in the final look of the paint.

Erick Scarecrow of ESC Toys just sent these fresh pics from a secret location in China...

The PRODUCTION MOLDS of CRUSH.

These metal forms are filled with a vinyl powder, sealed, and spun quickly in a heating unit.

Centrifugal force causes the powder to stick to the sides of the molds, filling every nook and cranny.

Once the vinyl is cooled, the molds are opened and the parts are ready for the next step.

Neptoon's 1st Vinyl - Work In Progress...

Jared and Garnet introduced me and Mark to master sculpter Eric Nocella Diaz. After seeing his work on their vinyl - BUZZ - we knew we'd found our guy.

CRUSH is one of the main characters in our concept series "Monstrocity High" and Neptoon Studios 1st vinyl "toy". I use the term toy lightly - we see it more as an interesting and fun way of building a potential audience and industry awareness - blah blah blah.

CRUSH Vinyl - WIP...

Stage 5A - Crush's head. My 2D drawing had tons of cheats in it and we had to make a few compromises because not everything will translate unless it has a solid form.

Eric has been super easy to work with and we've been able to make suggestions every step of the way.

Stage 3 - the rough layout is finished - at this point CRUSH has no fine facial details but all the main body parts have been roughed and assembled.

My partner in crime, Mark Thornton has started roughing out box designs.

Stage 6B - here's an update on the head and face. Details are being refined - ears, zipper on neck, nostrils, etc. The head is pegged and swivels at the neck (for casting and molding purposes).

Next stage - molding and casting the resin.

Well here it is.

With special thanks to our pal Brian Torrens, we now have a mock-up of the CRUSH box, complete with an acetate viewing window .

Brian and I go way back. I've known him since grade 5 or so and our paths seem to cross whenever the time is right. Brian worked with Todd and I once before: He painstakingly hand painted all of our miniature sets for our YTV series "The 9th Life of Sherman Phelps". He did an awesome job then and his help with the box is greatly appreciated.

Breakin' Out - Resin Final...

Here's the smooooothed out resin. NICE JOB ERIC!!! The sculpt will get cast in wax again overseas and all areas will get even tighter before they make the final steel mold.

Imagine two rival high schools side by side. One for Monsters (left) and one for Humans (right). In a bizarre supernatural earthquake the ground beneath the two schools falls away taking half of each school with it. When the huge crack closes, it slams the two remaining halves of the schools together.

Now that the Monster and Human schools have been stitched together the teachers are finding it hard to deal with the shared curriculum.

Mr. Goon, biology teacher, can't seem to stomach the thought of frog dissection while his Human counterpart, Miss Applecrabs, seems to relish the idea of cutting into a Quadrojellian Splat Bug.

Those human's are so creepy.

Garnet of Carnival Cartoons said he'd hook me up if I was interested in making a toy - well how could I resist. He and Jared just finished their first toy BUZZ and it's top notch quality. We had been wanting to do it for awhile but just needed the nudge. Thanks Garnet.

Here's a rough rotation of CRUSH that will be used for the sculpt. He'll be Neptoon's first independantly produced toy. Hopfully he'll be the first of many that will be made in this series. See my first blog post way back in Sept 2005 to see Cherri, Crush's love interest.

This will eventually be Cherri with an "i" - at least I think that'll be her name...we'll see. I'm sure she'll go through numerous changes before I'm happy with her...but here are a few ideas of what she could look like.

Here's the clean CRUSH for the sculpter. He requested some slight changes. The feet are bigger, legs thicker at the crotch, bolts close to the neck and the fingers into more of a mitten shape. We also made a few color adjustments. We're working with a rough box template for now until we agree on how tall this muthas gunna stand.

Too bad you can't have that cool thick black line on a toy. Oh well, I still think it looks pretty sweet.

This is the First drawing of Crush and Cherri (5 yrs old). Wow! I can't believe its been that long already. As you can see, they've changed quite a bit.
